In the first week of July 2018, Al Nisbet (Moredun Research Institute) attended the European Congress of Entomology, Naples, where he was invited to speak in the session, “Dermanyssus gallinae: an endless threat to the industry and human health”. Al presented data from the Horizon 2020-funded PARAGONE project in a session supported by the European COST Action FA1404 (COREMI). The talk, co-authored by collaborators in PARAGONE, was well received and fitted well with the other presentations on alternative control and novel chemotherapeutics.

Al reported that this was a great conference; medical and veterinary entomology were well represented, with some excellent talks on the use of transgenic mosquitoes and vector control. One of the scientific highlights was a talk by Francesca Barbero, Turin, about how blue butterflies fool ants into looking after their larvae.
